For those of you who don't know, giving platelets is a little different than giving whole blood. With whole blood, the process takes 15-20 minutes, and they just straight up suck you dry. With platelet donation, one arm is poked with a needle and your blood is taken away from you - except they run the blood through a machine that takes out the platelets and then they give you your blood back, minus the platelets but with some anticoagulant thrown in. Platelets are what makes your blood clot, so they are useful for those people who have a hard time with their blood clotting (cancer patients, hemophiliacs, etc.). And I'm sure I've totally mucked up the whole explanation of how giving platelets works, but ah well.
So, I'm hooked up to the machine, and I have always had a sensitivity to the anticoagulant, so my lips and teeth and fingers get all tingly (it's a weird feeling, let me tell you). So, about 40 minutes in, I start feeling really yucky, like I'm gonna puke. I tell the technician how I'm feeling and they stop the machine. I've very hot and flushed and nasty feeling. So, they get the needle outta me, give me a bag and some ice packs. I'm feeling better, and after about 10 minutes they let me sit up. Then, my stomach gets really upset, and guess what? I start throwing up. Oh joy! To throw up in front of a dozen people, it's so awesome! Yeah, not so much. But amazingly, I feel so much better once I'm done. Then, I had to wait another 15 minutes because they wanted my blood pressure to get up higher (probably because they didn't want me to pass out), and then I finally got to go home.
So, all day yesterday after I came home, I pretty much felt awful. My head was pounding, my stomach hurt, and I just wanted to lay down and sleep forever. Except, did I forget to mention that my husband had to work and I had to be at home with 2 crazy kids? Yeah. So yesterday, I was pretty much the worst mommy evah. I literally was counting down until nap time, and then from nap time to dinner time, then from dinner time to bedtime. Once they were in their beds, I was in mine. I think last night was the earliest I had fallen asleep in quite some time - like 10? This morning, I felt so much better, it's amazing.
Anyway, if you're still with me, sorry about lack of posting for the past couple of days. Hopefully this week will be a better week.
